The Threat of Bird Flu

As depicted in the TV movie "Fatal Contact: Bird Flu in America", the bird flu could very well mutate into a form that humans can pass to each other. So far the only humans to catch bird flu have been in contact with sick birds. There have not been any birds infected with bird flu found yet in North America. But many birds migrate back and forth from here to Asia where bird flu is being found.

The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) and the CDC are quite concerned that an epidemic could occur in humans in the next few years, or sooner! Please check the CDC and other sites by clicking here: INTERNET RESOURCES

The goal is to have the bird flu included in the next flu vaccine that we will be giving in the fall (about November). Unfortunately, the first vaccine they made was not effective. Back to the drawing board! Hopefully the next will be effective and they will produce enough for everybody to be vaccinated. Children under 9 get two shots (a month apart) if they have never had a flu vaccine before. If you have had any type of flu vaccine in the past, you only need one dose. At 9 years or older, you only need one dose, even if it is your first flu shot.

November is the month to get your flu shot!

Anti-viral meds such as Tamiflu can help shorten the symptoms of influenza, but these medicines may have minimal effect on the bird flu. There is not enough experience with the use of anti-virals on bird flu to know for sure.
