Fever-reducer medications can sometimes actually reduce the fever, but often they do not. But don't worry! That is not even the purpose of these medicines at all! They are actually intended to reduce the SYMPTOMS of the fever, such as discomfort, lethargy, or not eating or drinking enough. These medications cannot prevent complications of fever, since there are not any serious complications of fever. Fever is helping the body to fight infection, and does not cause any harm.
