Even a mild case of strep throat (group A) should always be treated in order to prevent the serious complications of strep like rheumatic fever which can damage the heart valves, brain, and joints. The kidneys can be damaged by post-strep glomerulonephritis, which can happen after having strep throat which is not treated with antibiotics.
